Ice Cycle Was Cool!

Congratulations to Saskatoon Cycles and We Are Many (WAM) on today's (2011-01-30) successful Ice Cycle event. It was a great bike parade! I enjoyed it and the 200 or so others there looked like they were having fun too. Great job Ellen Quigley, Sean Shaw, and all the others who helped make it a fantastic, green event. I can't wait until the next one.

For those of you not familiar with the event is was billed as: "The Coldest Bicycle Parade on the Planet". It was a mass bike ride to promote safe, efficient bicycle transportation in Saskatoon.

Ekos Poll Result Looks Good for Green Party of Saskatchewan

Take a look at page 6 of this Ekos poll for a nice surprise. When the <25 age group was asked: "If a federal election were held tomorrow, which party would you vote for?" they overwhelmingly said Green Party in Sask & Manitoba. Since the Saskatoon Sutherland constituency (which includes UofS, University of Saskatchewan) has a lot of <25's I think we actually have a good chance of winning in the next provincial election.

Volunteering and/or Donating to the Green Party of Saskatchewan

This could be very good for you! Please hear me out:

Consider volunteering to help the Green Party of Saskatchewan (GPS) . You could make this the best decision of your life. You could learn a lot, develop skills, have fun, pump up your resume, meet nice people (no let me say "meet VERY nice people") and... oh, save the world.

As you may have already noticed by visiting my blog my name is Larry Waldinger and I am a candidate for the Saskatoon Sutherland constituency in the November 7, 2011, Saskatchewan general election. I would really appreciate help from you with my campaign, and I know that other candidates for the GPS would like help in their campaigns. My campaign is in its infancy (today is: 2011-01-27) so I am still processing my paperwork to officially be a candidate. On my paperwork I need to list a "Business Manager" and an "Auditor", and that could potentially be YOU. If you are concerned about the burden on you I could keep the load light. To further reduce the pressure let me say that I think these positions could be changed if you later discovered you didn't want to continue. You can contact me at 306-384-3398 or lwaldinger@yahoo.com. You can also learn more about helping by reading Elections Saskatchewan's Candidate's Guide.

Here are some other ideas for your help. My bio info is the very first posting on this blog, dated January 9, 2011. Please take a look, and read through some of my other blog postings too. Make some comments. Please click to become a follower of this blog. There is no need to contact anybody either to help. If you study the issues in the upcoming election and vote wisely that would be great. If you are in a different geographic area please get involved with your nearest Green Party office or candidate. Rumors of a federal election are swirling about so if that is your preference, some volunteer work at the provincial level could be good training for you to work in the federal election. You could work for more than one candidate too. If you are already a business manager or auditor for one candidate it would require very little additional effort to do the same for more candidates. It would require some good organizational skills to balance more than one candidate.

Of course you could donate to my campaign or the GPS. If you want to make a donation to my campaign please make out a check payable to "Green Party of Saskatchewan", write in "Saskatoon Sutherland" in the memo field, and fire it off to the following address:

Please join as a member. You can make a donation and become a member at the same time with this membership form. The form includes an inspiring "Statement of Principles" that should get you thinking.

For your convenience there is also an online donation option. That is how I got started.

Give 'till it hurts!

Here is another mind blowing concept, you could run in your constituency or another constituency. We do not have a candidate in all of our constituencies yet, and it could conceivably be that you are even a better candidate than the current candidate where you live. Perhaps you could talk the current candidate into allowing you to replace them. Maybe they would even help you with your campaign or maybe they would campaign (parachute style) in another constituency. If a candidate that I believed in wanted me to make room for them I would not let my ego get in the way. I would do what is best for the party.

Let me tell you an inspirational story that might benefit a student you know. Someone close to me was active as a volunteer in politics. Based on her volunteer work she received awesome job offers before she was even finished college. She made a conscious decision to compromise her studies only slightly in order to enrich her resume with real life, hands on, volunteer work. It worked out well for her. It could work out well for you or someone you know.

Oh yes, and don't forget, we could save the planet. I am not only joking about this. I believe there are some serious mistakes being made on this planet, and we need to make some changes.

I hope to hear from you

Zero Tuition

From the Carillon, UNIVERSITY OF REGINA STUDENT NEWSPAPER, January 27, 2011:

“A Green Party of Saskatchewan Government will establish a zero-tuition fee policy for post-secondary education,” said Shasko [leader of the party], noting that the party has had a zero-tuition fee policy since 1998. She said the party believes that post-secondary education is a basic right, and should be accessible to a larger number of people, “Education is the key to a better quality of living and economic health,” she said.

Drunk on Petroleum Products

One Quarter of Canadians Drive While Intoxicated, Poll Finds

That's the headline for an Epoch Times story that made me think of Global Warming.

A recent CAA survey found that "98 percent were of the opinion that drinking and driving is unacceptable". They also determined "24 percent got behind the wheel in the past year believing they were above or near the legal limit for impaired driving". Another Epoch Times story reports: "More than three quarters of Canadians support random breath tests".

Here is the connection. Most people are of the opinion that Global Warming is also a serious problem, yet they do little to slow it. The situation is described as: "an apparent disconnect between belief and actual practice". It seems people know there is a problem, and they lack the will to do something about it, so they seek guidance.

Of course if those drunks could be discouraged from driving the roads would be safer and the carbon foot print would be reduced at the same time.

Royal Gender Equality

A British MP is trying to change the rules of succession (from CBC): "Britain's rules of succession should change so that any daughter born to Prince William and wife-to-be Kate Middleton would enjoy an equal right to the throne, a British member of Parliament says."

What a great, appropriate idea! Why hasn't this been done before?

Monthly Meeting

Last night I attended my first Saskatoon region monthly meeting with GPS (Green Party of Saskatchewan), and it was a very nice experience. If anybody reading this is interested in attending a meeting please come to the next meeting Wednesday, February 16 at Amigo's Cantina on Dufferin (1 block East of Broadway) between 10th St and Main St. What a great bunch! As expected these are people who really care, but it goes deeper than that. The members and candidates I met with have done some home work and are stepping up to the plate to swing at the ball. Sandra Finley, the regional organizer and candidate for Saskatoon Nutana was inspirational. Please come out! Give some input or just kick it. Larry W

Big Oil's Role in Extreme Weather Events

2011-01-14
Yesterday, there were extreme weather events being reported by CBC in Brazil, Germany, Phillipines, and Australia. All were floods. Today the body count in Brazil is at 479 and the count is rising as fast as the flood waters. We had severe flooding here in Canada in the past year more than once and in more than one location. Each time I hear of extreme weather events now, I think of Big Oil's involvement. Planet S Magazine reports that Big Oil funds researchers who deny the existence of global warming/climate change just as the tobacco industry funded scientists who denied that tobacco was harmful. Perhaps Big Oil should be charged a tax to start a fund for climate change mitigation.

Larry Waldinger, Candidate for Saskatoon Sutherland, Green Party of Saskatchewan, Election 2011-11-07

Larry Waldinger Biography

Larry Waldinger says: “Saskatchewan has been good to me, and I would like to give back through the Green Party of Saskatchewan (GPS).” He is proud to say he was born in “Pile of Bones” (Regina).  He grew up in Saskatchewan and credits the prairie culture for his: “solid work ethic, appreciation for nature, respect for others, healthy whole, and stick-to-it-iveness”. The politics of Saskatchewan have been an inspiration to him: “Saskatchewan has a rich history of strong independence, standing up against outside forces, and a drive to do what is correct.” Larry wishes to harness these home grown qualities to help continue Saskatchewan’s legacy in Saskatoon-Sutherland.

Larry’s education and career path have prepared him well to represent the people in the Saskatoon Sutherland constituency. He first experienced small business success at the age of eighteen when he bought a taxi. The “School of Hard Knocks” experience as a taxi driver was an education in itself and also financed a return to more formal education. Larry majored in psychology. He graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a BA and later received a teaching credential from one of the four universities and colleges he attended. He was on the dean’s honor list. Larry has studied, travelled, and worked internationally, and those experiences can all be leveraged locally. For years he dedicated his life to teaching junior high school math to metropolitan, inner-city students. While teaching, Larry established a small service business on the side and built it up to a “best in class operation” in a competitive, major market. The experience would make him a shrewd negotiator for the people in his constituency. He is also a published author in the field of corporate law. Larry has honed his decision making, consensus building, and communication skills to be the effective leader he is today.

The management style Larry Waldinger favors is to lead by example, and nowhere has this been more effective than his work with GPS. Regarding the personal, life style choices he has made in his commitment to environmental and social causes he says: “There are big things we can do, and there are little things we can do.” Larry has consistently done both and he will continue to do more. He would be glad to tell you about it directly.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns Larry invites you to contact him or any other of the fine people listed on this site. If you would like to help advance environmental and social causes please get actively involved. Your donations to the Green Party of Saskatchewan or the Green Party of Canada can make a huge difference too.

“I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species. I realized that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You move to an area, and you multiply, and multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet, you are a plague, and we are the cure.” Agent Smith
